I could not, even if I wanted to, abandon the site tonight without posting a short piece on the creator of the most famous detective ever, Sherlock Holmes. Of course, you've heard of Sherlock, if you haven't at least seen a spoof of him somewhere. Without the ingenuity of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and, coincidentially, Mrs. Doyle (Sir A's mom), then dear Sherlock Holmes never would have existed.
So Doyle started out wanting to be a doctor in life. Well, that was all very fine and dandy. Then, however, he encountered an extraordinary teacher at his medical university named Dr. Bell. (It is this man that Sherlock is based from.) As Doyle went on in his practice, he was inspired to write a story with a character based on Dr. Bell. His mother contributed the names for Sherlock and Watson, actually. So then Doyle published the story in Beeton's Christmas Annual, a magazine. It was an instant hit. So then Doyle found himself writing story after story of Sherlock Holmes. After a time, he was tired of the character, and decided he had better things to do with his writing, and so he killed of Sherlock in 'The Final Problem'. The public hated him so much for this that a great many people actually went into mourning for the fictional character.
Mrs. Doyle was responsible for getting Doyle to write more Sherlock. She sent him a message telling him to do so...or else. Well, I suppose Doyle didn't want to know what 'what else' was, so he hurriedly constructed the fabulous plotline of 'The Return of Sherlock Holmes'. It was the best major comeback in literary history, in my opinion.
So Doyle wrote on and on, more and more Sherlock until he was sick of him. Yet he persisted, because his mother insisted. He didn't understand that it was his special role in life to write Sherlock Holmes, sadly. He felt no great passion for the series anymore. In the end, the series ends quietly, with Holmes retiring to tend bees. Nice.
Sooooo that was my colliqual in-a-nutshell summary of the life of the creator of the most famous detective in history.
Who's actually read the books?
